stay healthy during monsoon season

Monsoon season may bring relief from the summer heat but it also brings a higher risk of disease and makes it difficult to stay healthy during monsoon. Pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi become more active in wet, humid environments and stagnating water provides an ample breeding ground for mosquitoes. If you are caring for child or elders, it is particularly important to protect against the risks that come during monsoon. So keep you and your family in the peak of wellness by following our tips to stay healthy during monsoon season.

1. Avoid Eating Street Food

Although street food can be tempting, it is best to avoid it during monsoon. Waterborne and airborne microorganisms have easy access to these foods, which if eaten, can give rise to stomach infections and digestive discomfort. Cook your comfort foods at home to prevent any unwanted illnesses.

2. Stay Hydrated

You may not feel particularly thirsty during monsoon but it is essential to stay hydrated. High levels of humidity lead to less sweating which makes the body less efficient at cooling off. Regularly drinking water will keep your temperature at a comfortable level and detoxify the body. Make sure you only drink safe, filtered water and avoid fizzy or caffeinated drinks. These drinks are diuretics which will dehydrate your further. They also contain preservatives and sweeteners which can disrupt your digestion.

3. Stay Safe From Dirty Water

Gutters and puddles of dirty water can house dangerous organisms which cause diseases like cholera, diarrhea and typhoid. Cover up with a warm hooded raincoat, rubber boots and an umbrella.

If you have diabetes, it is extra important to take care of your feet so keep them warm and dry to prevent fungal infections or ulceration. Stagnant water acts as the breeding ground for bacteria, flies and mosquitos. So, in-order to stay healthy during monsoon season, we need to make sure that our neighbourhood should be free from stagnant water.

4. Protect Yourself From Mosquitoes

Monsoon season is the perfect environment for mosquitoes to thrive. Protect yourself and your family by investing in mosquito nets and ensuring you are vaccinated against malaria. Cover yourself in insect repellent when you go outside.

Safeguard your home by identifying areas in which water can stagnate, such as flower pots or fountains. Keep these areas covered throughout monsoon season.

 5. Keep Your Hands Clean

Wash your hands with warm water and soap to protect yourself from germs. A sanitizing gel can be useful when you’re on the go, but it doesn’t kill all microorganisms, so physically remove pathogens by cleaning your hands regularly.

 6. Take A Fresh, Balanced Diet

Prevention is always better than a cure so boost your immune system with a high quality diet. Stave away colds by increasing your Vitamin C intake with citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables and supplements. Certain herbs and spices also promote immunity so infuse your favorite dishes with garlic, turmeric, coriander or turmeric. A good diet is compulsory to stay healthy during monsoon season.

You are also more likely to experience digestive discomfort during monsoon season. Fresh soups are nourishing and light, fresh fruits and vegetables are full of fiber and hot tea is warm and comforting. Make sure thoroughly wash or steam all produce to remove any harmful bacteria or fungi.
