Importance of Lifestyle Modifications Over Medications: Diabetes

I am a 64 year old lady. I am a working woman. I have been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus 8 years ago. At present I have body ache, I am on medication.

Importance of Lifestyle Modifications Over Medications: Diabetes

My medication includes Metformin (500 mg) OD, and Glimepride (1 mg) OD. I had a very poor record of my blood tests. It includes HbA 1 C, LDL, HDL, BS (F), BS(PP). My dietary pattern was extremely poor. Also, I never liked doing any physical activity either. I was having altered post prandial blood sugar levels. Due to uncontrolled skin infections I developed fungal skin infections and rashes all over the body. Seeing my condition, my doctor recommended adding of one more medicine on my prescription. To which I did not want at all, but could not refuse it either. The name of the medicine is Voglibose) 0.2 mg, OD.

I went to my diabetes educator to talk and explain her my situation and surround. She was quite, calm and kept an ear to all over conversation I made. I got anxious as she was listening to all but did not say anything. She was responding by either nodding the head and few more with some gestures.

Once I ended all my conversation, she began to say and asked me very simple question, in a commanding way, “Shall I ask you one question now…?? And you have to answer it in a “YES” or “NO”. I nodded my head to ok. Now it was her turn indeed…!!! She asked her first and the only question was, “do you love thyself and want to make your life enjoyable..?” I replied  Oh yes.. Dear..!! Cent percent!! She simply smiled and began to explain.

She told me control of Diabetes is dependent on easy and simple 4 steps. It includes:

  • Dietary control
  • Timely medication
  • Being physically active
  • Self-monitoring blood glucose

My Diabetes Educator told me that all four points are inter-related with each other. These are the four pillars on which Diabetes control is wholly dependent.

My Diabetes Educator wanted 6 months of mine to work according to her guidelines. After she explained everything, she left it over me to decide whether or not I am interested and wanted to continue further. I promised her to abide everything under her guidance. And thereafter, I worked on my diet, started up with physical activity, took medicines at time, and checked my blood sugar levels daily.

Now, after 6 months under her guidance I not only controlled my sugar levels but also I am more energetic, slim, glow on skin, shiny hairs, happy and confident person. I have controlled my HbA 1 C from 13.9 to 10.4 as of now. My weight has fallen down from 92 kgs to 82.6 kgs and till working on it to attain more. I have avoided all my infections too. I advise you all to bear some patience and follow your Doctor and Diabetes educator accordingly. They will bring the best in you.
